Paul Finn is a fundamentally English artist, but his images are rooted in a much wider awareness and appreciation of a more universal and transcendent culture that joins humanity in both spiritual and secular bonds. Whether it be the landscapes of his native Yorkshire, Italy, Wales or Dorset, every image is invested with the same intense scrutiny and lavished with the same weight of exquisite craft that underpins his relationship between his subject matter and the Art which they engender. From his own Art education Paul has inherited the strong values that reflect the special relationship which exists between man and his environment. This inheritence comes from his long association with the individuals and ideas from Ravensbourne College of Art and the Slade, Kass Cohen who was a key influene at Ravensbourne, and Sir William Coldstream and Malcolm Hughes at the Slade. The care, intensity, rigour and skill that Paul Finn brings to the considered marks in his work, carry an optimistic, celebratory and life affirming view of the continuity of the Landscape. Allied to this is a deep appreciation and knowledge of the works of artists like Samuel Palmer, Paul Nash, David Bomberg and Eric Ravillious, and the way they all sought to reflect the position of " landscape" as a reflection of the human psyche. For Paul Finn observation is the gateway to meaning and understanding, and his Art is the record of his constantly evolving journey.
